I really enjoyed the story about the cockroach because you rarely see a story about this hated insect. Most of the people detest it enough to not mention them ever, or consider them as living beings. Now seeing this story with the main character as a cockroach, and actually having sympathetic feelings towards it, is rare. I really liked this story as it makes you think of just how many cockroaches have you killed with your feet. Now we get to see him as different animals. And then the ending, how cockroaches are the only ones that could survive a nuclear attack. Makes you think about how such a despicable insect, that is despised by all, will actually be the only one to survive such disaster. Strength comes from unexpected places.
I really like that there is an issue dedicated and inspired to Steinbeck, whose stories have made me cry or question humanity on multiple occasions. I loved Ivan Rodriguez’s story Lilith. The irony of her father being a ‘bug scientist’ and that her stepmother hates insects makes for an interesting conflict for little Lilith. The ending is… can I say? Crushing
Steinbeck is one of my favorite writers, and I loved how he portrays the relationships between characters in his wirting. I liked the story of teacher Ivan RodrÃguez Lilith, I enjoyed reading it so much that I didn't realize that I got to the end really fast. Also the poem Growing Old was amazing. I loved how it used the images of the sun and taking a bus to portray the process of growing old. Is as it one day you are leaving the best years of your life (can be the journey you make in the bus) but when you least notice it you arrived at your destiny (the journey in the bus ends really quick).
